Tier 1 is an online objective test covering Quant, Reasoning, English, and GK (200 marks, 60 minutes). Tier 2 is a more advanced online test with a descriptive paper — this is where top-post ranks are decided. Tier 3 is a descriptive paper (essays and letters in English/Hindi). Tier 4 is a skill/computer test required only for specific posts like Tax Assistant or DEO. Most candidates focus heavily on Tier 1 and Tier 2.
SSC CGL is competitive — lakhs of candidates appear every year for a limited number of posts. The difficulty level of Tier 1 is moderate, but the cut-off scores are high because toppers score 140–155 out of 200. What makes it hard isn't the concepts — most topics are Class 10–12 level — but the speed and accuracy required. With 3–6 months of structured preparation and consistent mock tests, it's very achievable.
SSC does not impose a fixed number of attempts. You can appear as many times as you are within the age limit for that exam. For SSC CGL, the upper age limit is 32 years (with relaxations for OBC/SC/ST/PwD). So practically, you get multiple attempts between the age you graduate and your upper age limit. This means preparation quality matters more than rushing to appear early.
It depends on your starting level. If your Quant and Reasoning are already decent, 3 months of focused coaching + daily 4–5 hours of self-study is enough for a good Tier 1 score. If you're starting from scratch, 5–6 months is more realistic. Yes — SSC exams are open to all genders, and many posts (especially CGL posts like Income Tax Inspector, Auditor, Compiler) are office-based, stable, and highly valued by female candidates.
